Play is serious business for a child. Through seemingly innocuous activities, the child learns about his or her abilities, environment, other people, and the way the world works. A child also expands their vocabulary, develops their muscles, exercises their imagination, learns social skills like cooperation and sharing, and practices solving problems through play. The best toy matches the language, physical skill, interests, feelings, and social development of the child. Don't be swayed by brand names or price. A toy should be sturdy so as to be safe, but it does not have to be expensive or well-advertised to be appropriate. Ideal toys contribute to a child's physical, mental, or social development.
